ContactWhat You Would Do
If you choose to sign up and get to the field with us, you would:
- Help in distributing nets and educate people in how to use them.
- Be part of our team and go to one of the 9 villages we're planning to work with (in Sahn, see map to the right).
- Sleep in that village, talk to the people there about malaria and promote the use of nets.
- Play football in the Malaria Cup, celebrate with a team and make lifetime friends.
- Learn some cultures and traditions of Sierra Leone and receive the hospitality and warmth of the people in Sahn Malen.
In other words, you would essentially do all the things we do in the intervention phase - which you can read more about here.
Usually, people who join us in the field also choose to help out in the research and planning process as well. We encourage this as we get to know each other better before going to one of the most beautiful but devastated countries in the world.
What This Is Not
Although this trip will be adventurous and it develop you as a human being, it is not some self-help-journey-to-Africa. We are very serious about working with the locals and fighting malaria and demand that everyone on our team is too. Respect is a fundamental pillar that holds us together.
Feeling good about ourselves and experiencing some amazing things is a wonderful bonus, but that's not our primary mission and will therefore always stay secondary to even the tiniest detail of the project.
What We're Looking For
While we accept most people, you need to be:
- Energetic and hard-working.
- Open to, and understanding of, other cultures.
- Willing to pay for some of your own expenses (and OK with not being paid).
- Fine with not always having the last word.
- Fully responsible for your own actions and health.
- 18+ years and capable of speaking English (you don't have to be a native speaker, though).
Some exceptions can be made if your arguments are in order (this is merely a set of guidelines). Also note that this list is not exhaustive.
More Info & Sign Up
As this is quite a commitment and somewhat of an evaluation process from both parties, signing up will happen through a small string of consistent communication via email or other pathways. However, it's very straight-forward - just send us an e-mail and explain that you'd like to join us "in the field".
We truly hope you'll consider joining as we can't do this project on our own. By joining you'll be part of that rare breed of practitioners that collects real experience, rather than the army of armchair experts that only exchange opinions.
